I got this book as a present and it was the genre I usually read - or so I thought. It seemed to be a realistic psychothriller about a middle-aged woman, which made me hesitate to read it as I'm usually more into young-adult fantasy. Well, actually, it was a young-adult fantasy and in my opinion, the cover and pitch do a really bad job in telling that message.The story is about Liz Kendall, a middle-aged woman getting a divorce from her violent ex-husband. But it is also (and that is totally missing in the description!) About 17-year old Fran who was abducted when she was younger, an incident that caused severe mental problems.Fran's and Liz' stories are somehow intertwined and I really loved to read about them. The slow building of the story, all the different characteres that add upp to a stunning masterpiece, were fast to convince me of the story and I fell in love with the words and the story.However, there were two points that were not fully to my liking (spoiler alert!):1) The explanation to Liz' and Fran's mental problems. I mean, I love fantasy, but in my opinion it somehow downgrades mental illnesses - it suddenly seems like mental illnesses are not an issue because there are fantastic reasons behind them. I think I would have preferred a more detailed view about mental illnesses and maybe even a realistic background - not fantastic explanations, but them actually going mad which would have been totally authentic to me.2) The end. After the very slow building of the story, with all those details, I was simply disappointed by how suddenly the book ended. There are some major questions that were not answered in the book, which could have been fixed with, say, 50 pages more. What is the Perry Friendly? What will Jinx and Fran become - long-term? Is Fran and Zac going to happen? Etc. It actually seems like there is a sequel planned, but if that's the case, I'd like to know about it already!So, to sum it up, a cool and readable novel that exceeded my expectations in many points, but let me down in some others.
